Jul 01, 2003· I have a 8 1/2 D Gorton Vert. mill with a 9" x 34" table. Spindle does no tilt and only moves in and out as Doozer's does. Mine takes a small collet made only by Gorton. I have bought some from gentlemen on this site long time ago. My mill has a 1 1/2 HP/ 230VDC motor.
My suggestions, in order, are: 1) buy a new mill, 2) buy a used mill, 3) buy just the saw carriage and build the rest, 4) design and build. You will need a lathe, mill, drill press, power metal saw, welders. If you have to have machine work done, figure at least 50 per hour. Most materials will be bought at retail prices.

IMHO, by the time you couple a mule drive or right angle gear box with all the fabrication necessary a horizontal shaft engine would look pretty good. Of course that depends on how much your time is worth to you. Converting your engine to run the crank in a horizontal position is not feasible.
